Reconnecting with Friends February 8, 2009

I recently had the opportunity to reconnect with one of my best friends from high school.  We have kept in touch over the years via sporadic email, phone calls and Christmas cards.  While, a few weeks ago, I was thinking about her one night during the week and I just decided to call her.   As we chatted, the years just melted away.  The distance, miles and the fact our lives are very different and we each took different turns didn’t matter, we were chatting like it was only yesterday that we saw each other instead of over fifteen years.  So, I encourage you to reach out to one of your high school best friends and if you are still really good friends, give them a call and say thank you.  Remember inspiration comes from others as well as yourself.  My friend reminded me of that as we reconnected and found a new connection again.  So, thank you good friend.  I’ve missed you and glad we’ve reconnected.

I recently reconnected with a friend I’ve known for almost 45 years. We were best friends through Junior High and High School and lost touch in the early 80s after our lifestyles took us in different directions. Browsing through Classmates.com on a rare occasion, I discovered that she’d recently become widowed. After some hesitation I decided to reach out and am glad I did. She was thrilled to hear from me. We’ve been out together several times and after 25 years, we amazingly picked up where we left off. She’s had a very tough time since her husband passed and told me that our renewed friendship has been a bright spot. For me, aside from the social aspect of the friendship, it brings back memories with someone who was “there”. It’s great to have a friend from your childhood who remembers what you were like when you were 12. In reminiscing, I’ve recalled events and people long forgotten and learned more about myself. It’s been a rewarding experience and I recommend to anyone contemplating reaching out to an old friend to do so.
