Happy St. Patty’s Day – Do You Wear Green? March 17, 2009

Filed under: General — marysarap @ 8:00 pm

Today is March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day and the day for the Irish.  It’s Evacuation Day in Boston and the schools were closed in Boston.  There were St. Patrick Day parades throughout the Greater Boston area last Sunday.  People come out and celebrate their heritage.

Being part Irish, having had my mother’s parents come directly from Ireland through Ellis Island in th1920’s, I remember them today.  Yes, I wore my green today along with a shamrock charm to celebrate and acknowledge the “Irish” in me.  What do you do to celebrate your heritage?  When I went to Ireland a few summers ago with my aunt and uncle, it was amazing.  Ireland is an incredible, beautiful place and to think that my grandshamrockparents left their homes and traveled to the US to make a new life for themselves is amazing.  They left the life they knew and took a leap of faith and created a wonderful life and family here.

So, while others celebrate with St. Patrick’s Day jokes, drinking green beer and wearing of the green, I salute you Grandma “Gram” and Grandpa “Pa” and my Irish heritage.  Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

As St. Patrick was actually the son of a Romano-British Christian, we Americans of Italian decent also celebrate his day by wearing green, preparing a traditional Irish meal and of course enjoying beer. I think in keeping with traditions, we maintain our heritage(s) and honor those who have long gone before us.
